TWO men who planned to sell illegal drugs on the streets of Barrow were sentenced to more than two years in jail.

James Kiernan, 25, of no fixed abode, and Daniel Watton, 26, of Copster Hill Road, Oldham, received prison terms of two years and four months at Preston Crown Court for two counts of possession with intent to supply.

The men were found with crack cocaine and diamorphine and were planning to distribute the drugs in the Barrow area.

A Cumbria police spokesman said:

"We are glad that both Kiernan and Watton are now facing time in prison for the crimes.

"We work hard to tackle the issue of drugs supply within Barrow and around the rest of the county.

"Drug supply does not just affect those who deal and buy, it can often have a detrimental effect on the local community as drug users look to fund their addiction by committing offences against innocent people."

On May 12 officers saw Kiernan leaving The Lodge in Lawson Street before a police search was set to take place.

Once in the property, police found drugs within the rooms being used by Kiernan and were later informed he was on the Channelside footpath, behind Furness College.

Kiernan was soon arrested and Watton was picked up later that day.

The pair were seen together before Kiernan's arrest.

Following a search of the footpath area a police dog found two small containers holding drugs.

The police spokesman added: "We rely on the community informing us of suspicious activity or information around illegal drug use or supply in the area.

"If you have any information, please get in touch."

Anyone with information about the supply of drugs is asked to contact police on 101.
