OUR reporter, JONATHAN REES, took on the Burger Challenge at Barrow's Custom House
FOR those thinking of taking on the Burger Challenge at One restaurant and bar at the Custom House, in Barrow, think again.
In the four years since the restaurant's managing director, Kieron Hart, has been running the challenge, more than 120 people have tried; only 10 have succeeded.
The monumental task consists of wolfing down a ridiculous amount of food in just 45 minutes. As I looked down at the platter before me, to say I was apprehensive was an understatement.

Three six-ounce cheeseburger patties topped with bacon, black pudding, onion rings and hash browns; a 12-inch "Cumberdog" topped with mustard, onions and cheese; a bowl of fries, a bowl of cheesy nachos and coleslaw make up the 5,000-calorie feast.
Mr Hart said of the challenge: "There's a lot of bravado and people thinking 'I will smash that' and when they realise how much stodge there is, it changes. It's beyond me, I couldn't do it."
It was into this arena that I bravely, or perhaps, foolishly stepped into.
Mr Hart gave a wry smile when I asked what he thought my chances would be. When I was told just how few had completed the challenge, any slim hopes I'd entertained of actually succeeding vanished quickly.
After signing a disclaimer releasing the restaurant from any responsibility should I injure myself during the challenge, I was ready to tuck in.
It will not surprise anyone that I failed miserably. I started well, powering through the first two patties in 10 minutes.
Then...the bread. Never eat bread during a challenge. As soon as I took the first bite of the bun, it was over.
Hats off to the team at Custom House. They put on a fantastic spread, and even refrained from laughing at me as I crashed and burned.
If you want to take on the challenge, it will cost you £27.50, which is refundable on completion of the challenge.
The Custom House is on the corner of Abbey Road near Tesco.
