A WOMAN has been left injured and badly shaken after a man tried to rob her outside Furness General Hospital.

On Friday morning between 8.45am and 9.05am, a 23-year-old woman was walking past the staff accommodation block at FGH when she was attacked from behind.

The unidentified male assailant ran at the woman, grabbing at her, attempting to take her mobile phone by force.

During the ordeal, the woman sustained a bloody chin as she tried to fight off the attacker.

After the woman managed to struggle free, the man fled on foot through the accommodation blocks.

He was described as a white male, about 5ft 6in tall, of medium build wearing blue jogging bottoms and a grey hooded top.

Following the crime, a local 43-year-old man was arrested, but has since been released without charge.

Detective Sergeant Mike Wallace, of Cumbria Constabulary, said: "We are continuing our investigation into what was a cowardly attack on this young woman.

"We are appealing for residents or persons who may have been in the locality at the time, and who we have not already spoken to, to come forward with any relevant information."
