POLICE are appealing for information following an incident of attempted robbery in Barrow.

Officers were called to a jewellers on Rawlinson Street, close to the junction of Cavendish Street, at 2pm yesterday, with a report that a man had threatened staff with a screwdriver before running off. No-one was injured and no goods stolen.

A 32-year-old man from Barrow was arrested yesterday on suspicion of robbery and released on bail. However police remain very keen to hear from members of the public who were in the area on Monday afternoon as enquiries continue.

The offender is described as being a white male, of slim build, 5ft 7in, wearing a camouflage top with a hood, and jogging style bottoms. He spoke with a local accent.

Detective Sergeant John Dilks said: “Robbery is a very serious crime and we are working hard to establish exactly what happened. Fortunately no-one was injured, but it was obviously still a distressing incident for those involved.

“This type of activity will not be tolerated in Cumbria and any information may prove vital in bringing the offender to justice. We are appealing for any members of the public who were in the Rawlinson Street or Cavendish Street area at around 2pm yesterday to come forward.”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Cumbria Police on 101. Alternatively contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
