FIREFIGHTERS had to cut a woman free from the backseat of a car after it was involved in a crash.

Police, fire crews and paramedics were called to Marsh Street, Barrow, at just after midnight this morning to reports of a two-car collision.

A white Ford Fiesta is understood to have been driven round the corner of the road before being crashed into a Vauxhall Corsa.

The driver and one passenger in the Corsa managed to get out of the car but a female backseat passenger was trapped and complaining of breathing difficulties and back pain.

Firefighters used cutting equipment to remove the car door and release the woman after mobilising her onto a spinal board before giving her oxygen therapy.

She was taken to Furness General Hospital but her injuries were not believed to be serious.

The 21-year-old Fiesta driver, a man from Barrow, was arrested on suspicion of failing to provide a specimen and remained in custody at Barrow Police Station.
