Centres around the Furness are hosting events to raise money for the cancer charity, Macmillan Cancer Support.

Macmillan Coffee Mornings began in 1990 when a small group of people came together for a coffee and donated the cost of the drink to the charity.

Over the past 25 years, the idea has spread and people across the UK have managed to raise more than £138m for cancer support.

Now, with more than 20 venues in the area hosting events this week, people are clubbing together to raise even more money for cancer care.

Macmillan Coffee Morning officially takes place on Friday September 25, but some venues will also be holding additional events.

Hawcoat Sports and Social Club will be hosted a special event at 10am today. The event included coffee and handmade cakes in addition to a raffle and tombola.

Two centres will be splitting the proceeds between Macmillan Cancer Support and Jo's Appeal, the foundation that was created in memory of the Evening Mail journalist, Jo-anne Davies, who died last month.

Co-op Sports and Social Club and the Evening Mail are donating some of the money raised to Jo's Appeal which supports the oncology unit at Furness General Hospital, St Mary's Hospice and The Eve Appeal.
