A SOUTH Lakes MP has celebrated government changes to the organ donor system, after years of campaigning.
The government announced England would be adopting an opt-out organ donation system, just like the model seen in Wales.
South Lakes MP Tim Farron called the planned changes a "big win" for the country.
He said: “Today’s announcement is a big win for the six thousand people who are currently on the organ donor waiting list.
“Nearly 500 people dying in England last year waiting for an organ donor, which is why I submitted an Early Day Motion calling for an opt-out organ donation system.
“We’ve been pushing for this change for years and I now look forward to seeing these plans come to Parliament – it looks like we’ve finally won our campaign.”
