Rolling news and live updates after a man barricaded himself into a hotel room at the Hotel Imperial in Cornwallis Street, Barrow, this morning.

2.33pm: Police confirm the hostage situation has concluded.

Police said: "Shortly after 1.20pm today (9th March) officers forced entry to a room at the Hotel Imperial on Cornwallis Street, following concerns for the welfare of both persons.

"The male, aged 21, from Barrow has been arrested on suspicion of false imprisonment.

"He will require hospital treatment for self-inflicted injuries.

"The woman, aged 22, from Barrow who was with him in the hotel room is uninjured.

"Police attended the hotel this morning following enquires into an earlier assault.

"Numerous police resources were used, including trained negotiators, in an attempt to safely resolve the situation.

"Armed officers were deployed as a precaution. There was no threat to the wider public during this incident."

12.55pm: The hostage situation is still ongoing.

11.39am: Police are still at the scene with additional vehicles also now at the hotel.

10.30am: Armed police pictured entering the hotel.

10.02am: More police vehicles have now arrived at the scene.

9.56am: Police negotiators are at the hotel and attempting to resolve the situation.

9.50am: It is understood the man who has barricaded himself into a room has an adult female, who is known to him, with him.

9.45am: An eye-witness reported seeing armed police going into the hotel.

9.36am: Police have now been at the scene for at least two and-a-half hours according to one eye-witness who first saw officers at the hotel at around 7am.

9.07am: Police confirm there is an ongoing incident at the Hotel Imperial

8.40am: A heavy police presence is pictured at the Hotel Imperial with officers stationed at the front and back of the venue.

A spokesman for Cumbria Police said: "Police are currently dealing with an incident in Barrow where a man has barricaded himself inside a hotel room.

"Officers attended the incident earlier this morning at the Hotel Imperial on Cornwallis Street and remain at the scene.

"There is no believed threat to the wider public."
