A LANE closure on an arterial road through Barrow has been lifted today.

A section of the northbound carraigeway of Abbey Road had been coned off since January following a serious fire at the Grade II listed building known as the House of Lords.

Motorists had been unable to use two northbound lanes near to the derelict property over fears for its stability.

A restriction on the outside lane was finally lifted today allowing traffic to use the road.

A lane nearest to the front of the building remains closed.

Just the shell remains of the disused building, officially named the Working Men's Club, after the major blaze ripped through it overnight on January 11.

At its peak, the fire was tackled by around 60 firefighters, with crews from Barrow, Walney, Millom, Ulverston, Grange, Windermere, Bootle, Arnside and even Lancaster involved.

Investigators later found traces of the accelerant petrol on site.
