HUNGRY customers are causing traffic delays in Barrow this afternoon as the repercussions of KFC's closure continue.

The fried chicken restaurant, on Hollywood Retail Park, Barrow, was one of a number around the country to close this weekend after running out of chicken.

After closing on Friday night, the store is expected to be shut until further notice.

A sign in the store window says: "We deliver our chicken fresh into our restaurants, but we've had a few hiccups with the delivery today.

"We wouldn't want to be open without offering our full menu, but we'll be back at the fryers as soon as we can.

"Apologies for any inconvenience."

The company have said the issues were caused after "teething problems" with a new delivery partner.

A spokesperson said: "The chicken crossed the road, just not to our restaurants.

"We've brought a new delivery partner onboard, but they've had a couple of teething problems. Getting fresh chicken out to 900 restaurants across the country is pretty complex.

"We won't comprimise on quality, so no deliveries has meant some of our restaurants are closed, and others are operating a limited menu, or shortened hours.

"Shout out to our restaurant teams who are working flat out to get us back up and running again."

The restaurant's temporary closure has seen hungry customers flock to nearby McDonald's this lunchtime, with a high number of guests using the drive-thru.

Hindpool Road was particularly affected, with the queues leading to backlogs on the stretch of road heading into the town.

The problems were worsened by Barrow Raiders' clash with Leigh Centurions at Craven Park this afternoon.

The delivery problems affected all of Cumbria's KFC restaurants, with Carlisle's also closed all weekend.

Frustrated shoppers took to Twitter in the wake of the closure.

Dylan King said: "Seems every person in Barrow has resorted to Maccies at once in the great KFC chicken crisis of 2016."

Selina Jolliffe said: "Doesn't it make you proud to be a Barrovian."

Twitter user Kay said: "As if KFC Barrow have run out of chicken and had to shut... look out McDonalds staff."
