A CORONER has today ordered a jury to reach a unanimous verdict as they consider the death of a Barrow father in prison.

Richard Scott Green, 23, was found hanged in his cell at HMP Haverigg in May last year - six months into a 42 month term for burglary.

The inquest, which has lasted eight days, heard evidence that the Broad Close resident had self harmed on three previous occasions dating back to 2007.

He had also claimed to have been the victim of bullying and intimidation by other inmates over tobacco debts, his mother, Muriel Green, told the court, and was distressed his application for a family day, to enable him to spend time with his five month old daughter Lacei-Mai, had been refused.

Senior coroner for Cumbriam David Roberts, took more than three hours to summarise the evidence heard before sending the jury out to consider a verdict.

The hearing, which is being held at County Hall, in Kendal, is being considered as an Article 2 inquest - a legal term used when someone dies while under the care of the state.
