A BARROW man has been spared jail after being accused of several counts of assault.

Rocky Thompson, 25, of Mount Pleasant, Barrow was given a 19-month sentence, suspended for 12 months by Judge Beverley Lunt at Barrow Crown Court.

He pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm and actual bodily harm on February 21. He also pleaded guilty to charges of criminal damage and possession of cannabis, but no penalty was given by the judge.

The court heard how Thompson has wrestled with a drug addiction, but has kept out of trouble for 13 months.

Thomson said: "I've been trying really hard, ma'am. I'm fighting for my life."

Judge Lunt replied: "I'm the one fighting to keep you out of jail."

As well as a suspended sentence, Thomson was given a 40-day rehabilitation activity requirement.

As he left the court, Judge Lunt said: "Make sure I don't see you again."
