A DARING challenge inspired by a world famous amateur racing competition could soon be drawing crowds to the streets of Barrow.

The Red Bull Soapbox Race is an annual, international event in which amateur drivers race homemade soapbox vehicles fulled by only courage and nerves of steel.

Now, a team of volunteers working in conjunction with Barrow BID, have expressed their determination to establish a Furness version of the renowned Soapbox Race.

Simon Craig, chair of Barrow BID said: "We are thinking it's a really good event that will bring communities together.

"It's for the young and for the old, and we think Dalton Road is an ideal location.

"It is something different- at the open meeting everyone was talking about Ulverston and Kendal and the events they get.

"Well this is totally different to anything they get and it is ideal for a town full of engineers. I think BAE would hate to be beaten by Siemens.

"We are hoping for pub teams, shop teams, football teams and school groups."

If plans go ahead, the race would see homemade buggies and karts hurtling down Dalton road, beginning their journey by flying down a ramp which would be placed outside Home Bargains at the top of the street.

Racers would then rattle down past the statue before continuing past Marks and Spencer, with a finish line at the bottom.

Mr Craig is hoping the event will be able to go ahead in July, 2019, allowing schools adequate time to get involved, plan their vehicles, and piece them together.

Over the years, the Red Bull event has travelled the globe and saw designs such as pianos, a giant baby carriage, a rodeo clown and a massive corn on the cob hurtle down tracks in front of packed out crowds.
