AN acclaimed project to change the way health services are provided across the area has been awarded a multi-million funding grant.

Better Care Together was launched last year to re-shape the way people access healthcare across Barrow and south Cumbria.

The scheme was yesterday awarded £5m from the government to enable it to continue its work.

Andrew Bennett, the senior responsible officer for Better Care Together, said it was a "vote of confidence" in the programme.

"Our challenge now is to make the changes in the way local services work together.

"This will result in fewer patients being referred to hospital, and fewer patients being admitted to hospital, with more appropriate forms of care arranged to support patients either in or closer to their homes."

The latest funding award will be used to improve community services for vulnerable, frail and elderly people who are at risk of being admitted to hospital as well as to reduce hospital waiting lists for a number of outpatient clinics.
