THE identity of a midwife sacked over the death of a newborn baby earlier this year has been revealed.

Sources within the trust which runs Furness General Hospital say it is Lindsey Biggs, whose conduct was found to have fallen “substantially below” acceptable standards during the serious incident in March.

Her involvement in the care of the baby was investigated by a team of external experts from the Royal Preston Hospital. She was then dismissed by the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust following an internal disciplinary hearing.

Bosses at the Barrow hospital have referred Ms Biggs’ dismissal to the industry’s regulator, the Nursing and Midwifery Council, along with the findings of the investigation.

It is the second referral they have made in relation to Ms Biggs – who is one of two midwives facing a fitness to practise hearing next week over alleged failings relating to a separate case from 2008 – Dalton newborn Joshua Titcombe.

The hearing, which also relates to FGH midwife Holly Parkinson, will begin at the NMC’s London headquarters on Monday.

In relation to the newest referral, a spokesman for the NMC said: “The NMC is aware that a midwife employed by UHMBT has been dismissed following an internal disciplinary process.

“We were recently made aware that the trust had launched an investigation into events surrounding the tragic death of a baby earlier this year and we have remained in close contact with the trust throughout.

“We made it clear in our discussions that we would expect the trust to make a referral to the NMC should they have concerns about this midwife’s fitness to practise.

“We can confirm that we have received a referral in relation to this midwife today and we will take the necessary steps to investigate as a matter of urgency.

“As this is an ongoing situation, it would be inappropriate for us to comment further.”
