HUNDREDS of Evening Mail readers have had their say to vote for the most annoying speed bumps in Barrow.

We launched the online poll last week in response to a number of complaints from drivers about the condition of some of the town's speed bumps.

Some motorists argued they have to slow down to below 5mph to traverse the bumps in Risedale Road, while the damaged bumps in Rawlinson Street are annoying to many.

Holker Street is also a bugbear, as is Rating Lane, High Street and the small speed bumps used by supermarkets such as Asda.

Although the results were extremely close, the majority named Risedale Road as the most annoying for speed bumps, with the 'other' option of Thorncliffe Road coming a close second.

In third place was Holker Street, followed by Rawlinson Street, Asda car park and Rating Lane. A total of 300 readers have voted so far.

From past experience, it appears motorists' moaning can result in action being taken against annoying speed bumps.

In 2011, a story in the Evening Mail featured complaints from motorists about the speed bump in High Street, Barrow, by the end of Dalton Road.

The bump’s slope down to the road was so steep cars driving over it within the speed limit were scraping the fronts of their cars on the road.

Driving instructor Kev Smith, with the Top Gear School of Motoring, said at the time that the speed bump could potentially result in pupils on their tests being failed.

In response, Cumbria County Council bosses repaired the speed bump at a cost £1,300.

More than £75m was spent on traffic calming measures across the UK in 2014 - an increase of £26m from the previous year.

Figures released to Churchill Car Insurance reveal that on average, each local authority spent £213,895 in 2013 and £327,0585 in 2014. However, the amounts paid vary significantly across the UK, with Cumbria County Council spending £83,000 on traffic calming measures in 2014 and £80,000 in 2013.

Traffic calming measures include the use of self-enforcing speed reduction measures such as road humps, mini roundabouts, chicanes, central islands and reduced speed limits. There are an estimated 5,900 zones with 20mph limits in the UK.
