BARROVIANS have once more rallied round a family in need and pledged cash donations after the devastating loss of one family's Christmas savings.

Bekka Higgins was shopping in Barrow town centre earlier this week when she lost an envelope containing around £800 in Park shopping vouchers, including a Primark card, Debenhams vouchers and a JD gift card, somewhere between Dalton Road and Debenhams.

Although the envelope contains her full name and address the vouchers have not been returned and Park has said the giftcards cannot be cancelled and reissued.

In a post on Facebook, in which the heartbroken mum-of-three sadly declares "Christmas is cancelled", Mrs Higgins reveals although she can claim on her house insurance they won't pay up until January and will still mean paying an excess.

Since their plight was made public, a JustGiving page set up by Mrs Higgins' husband Jay has attracted pledges of £430 while an anonymous donor has arranged for £300 in cash to be given to the Higgins via The Mail .

The anonymous donor, who has lived and worked in Barrow but is now based elsewhere, saw the Higgins' story online.

They said: "It's a sad story and they look nice folk. Wish them a happy Christmas from me."

Mrs Higgins, who works at Furness General Hospital, revealed she has suffered a double tragedy this week with the loss of her grandmother last night.

She said last night: "Today has been a horrendous day for our family. My family lost a very close member this evening and I've been there supporting them, to come home and see my husbands family helped him set up a go fund page.

"I feel truly blessed to have such amazing people around me. Even strangers are contacting me with messages of support and donations. I'm a proud woman and have been humbled by the massive support."

Mrs Higgins has contacted Park and says she has been told that as the vouchers are classed as a currency they can't be replaced.

Anyone who has any information about the missing vouchers can contact Mrs Higgins through The Mail by emailing amy.fenton@nwemail.co.uk or calling 01229 840161.
