More than 700 children have started The Reading Passport 2016 scheme with the Evening Mail and The News Foundation.

Each year thousands of children in the UK take part in the award-winning reading and literacy project.

Key Stage Two pupils receive a reading passport and a copy of the Evening Mail every week for six weeks.

They complete fun and educational activities to develop a wide range of skills as they explore the people, places and events.

Louise Ellis, a teacher at St George’s CE Primary School in Barrow, said her pupils are excited to get started on the project.

Evening Mail editor James Higgins said: “We’re thrilled to be involved in the The Reading Passport 2016 programme.

“It’s really important that young people understand what’s happening in their local communities and I hope that by providing them with a print edition of the Evening Mail once a week for the duration of this project, we will ignite a passion in them for news and current affairs.

“News has never been more accessible – through our new website and daily print editions – and I look forward to receiving feedback from the children involved in the programme about what they have learned.”
