HUNDREDS more homes are on the cards for a popular town as a major development plan is submitted to council chiefs.

Permission is being sought for 235 new houses at Gascow Farm, off Priory Road, in Ulverston, together with infrastructure such as roads, landscaping and utilities.

The submission is the latest in a line of applications received by South Lakeland District Council for new housing developments in the area – with the running total of new homes in the pipeline for the town understood to be more than 900.

It comes just weeks after council officials agreed to put £300,000 towards the development of a £1.6m roundabout on the A590 at Pennington Lane which highways experts say is crucial if housing developments in the Croftlands area are to be realised in the next 10 years.

Gascow Farm is one of the larger parcels of land allocated for residential development within the South Lakeland Local Development Plan.

The plan sets out where up to 1,012 new properties, as well as sites for new business premises, can be constructed in Ulverston before 2025.

But news of the application was met with concern from Ulverston Town Councillor Andrew Butcher, who said the number of planned new homes was becoming a 'serious concern' for nearby residents.

"We seem to be fighting a losing battle over all these new houses coming forward," he said.

"This latest one is another large housing estate for south Ulverston.

"Where is the infrastructure to support it? The schools are already full, the roads and sewage system can't cope with all these extra homes and my biggest worry is still over flooding.

"There needs to be some serious work undertaken to make sure this doesn't worsen the problem in south Ulverston for the residents who already live there."

The application for Gascow Farm has been put forward by North West firm Rowland Homes Ltd, based in Leyland, working with Wigan agent Steven Abbott Associates.

It is being assessed by SLDC planning officials with nearby residents set to be offered the chance to comment on the proposal in the coming weeks.

Members of the authority's planning committee will then vote on whether or not permission should be granted.
