CROWDS of people gathered in the sunshine to take part in a regional sporting event.

Hawcoat Park Sports Club played host to people across the North West who descended on Barrow to take part in a remote control car competition.

These tiny, electronic cars whizzed their way around a specially-crafted course that tested the mettle of even the most seasoned driver.

Simon Rice, chairman of the Hawcoat Park Model Car Club, welcomed hundreds people to his home turf as drivers battled it out to score more points.

Mr Rice said: "This is a regional event. "We have a local club at Hawcoat Park for local people but a lot of people here today have from Scarborough, Manchester, Liverpool, Cheshire and North Wales.

"We've got about 120 drivers from four or five years old to 60 or 70 years old."

The event proved to be the perfect family affair as generations of families came together to compete.

Stuart Jones, North West regional representative for the British Radio Car Association, said encouraging young people to take part is key.

He said: "If the parents have got the incentive to encourage them it's great but a 14 year old with a paper round can be difficult.

"Father Christmas can be good sometimes!"

Mr Rice was pleased with the success of the event and said it was nice to see people coming together to bond over the sport.

He said: "It's good fun and it's about the coming together of people."
