MEMBERS of the public are being asked to nominate someone to have the honour of raising Michaelson Road Bridge in Barrow at a celebration event.

Associated British Ports is marking the 150th anniversary of the Port of Barrow with a special event on Sunday July 16.

As part of the celebrations on the day, a member of the public will raise Michaelson Road Bridge, which separates Devonshire and Buccleuch docks.

A road bridge was first built connecting Barrow and Barrow Island in around 1880 and the current, modern bridge was constructed in the early 1960s.

ABP is calling on the people of Barrow to nominate a local hero to open the celebration parade and raise the bridge.

Nominees could include community activists, politicians, charity workers, individuals from local businesses or voluntary groups or anyone who has played an integral part in contributing to the glory and history of the town.

Carl Bevan, ABP Divisional Port Manager, said: “We need the help of the people of Barrow to be able to choose the best candidate to kick-off celebrations at this special event.

“We are proud to have played a key role in the economic prosperity of the town for the past 150 years and are committed to supporting Barrow’s vibrant local community. Together with our sister Port of Silloth, we contribute around £100m to the region’s economy and support more than 1,500 jobs.”

Live music by local bands will animate the day.

Families will also be able to enjoy additional fun activities, including face-painting, a bouncy castle, a wide selection of local food and craft stalls and displays from companies with connections to the port and town.

To nominate your local hero, email barrow@abports.co.uk . The deadline for submissions is Sunday June 25.
