A BARROW man banned from possessing firearms for life was found to have a gun at his house.

Stephen Allan Brown, 34, of Sowerby Avenue, pleaded guilty to possessing a firearm when he appeared at Furness Magistrates' Court today.

Police found a .22 BB handgun air weapon when they searched his house on April 18.

Anyone given a custodial sentence of three years or more is banned from possessing a firearm for life. Brown served a three-year custodial sentence in 2005 for supplying drugs.

Mr Trystan Roberts, defending, said: "He accepts he had it in his property and he showed police where the weapon and the ammunition was. He hasn't tried to hide anything.

"It was originally his brother's and he hadn't used it or realised he was committing an offence.

"This is not a case where he's been outside brandishing it, it's just been in his custody."

Brown was handed a 15-week custodial sentence, suspended for 12 months, in July.

The case was adjourned for an all options pre-sentence report to be prepared ahead of sentencing on Wednesday October 4.

Brown was granted unconditional bail.
