POPULAR chain, Wetherspoons, yesterday cut the price of all its food and drink, including at its pub in Barrow.

JD Wetherspoon, which has pubs in Barrow, Carlisle, Workington and Whitehaven, backed the national Tax Equality Day, a protest aimed at highlighting the benefit of a VAT reduction in the hospitality industry.

Prices at all JD Wetherspoon pubs across the country will be reduced by 7.5 per cent across the board for the day to demonstrate the benefits of a cut in VAT, said a spokesman for the chain.

Wetherspoon's says pubs paying lower VAT would create jobs and generate growth in the industry.

All present food and drink in pubs are subject to 20 per cent VAT charge, compared to supermarkets which benefit from a zero VAT rate on all food.

As a result, supermarkets are able to use that saving to sell alcohol at a discounted rate, he said.

Wetherspoon's pubs in England, Wales and Northern Ireland cut the price of all food and drink by 7.5 per cent on Wednesday.
