FOOD giant Greggs is to start selling Fairtrade bananas in hundreds of its shops.
The move was welcomed by the Fairtrade Foundation, saying it would benefit banana producers in Colombia, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic.
Greggs has two stores in Barrow, one in Dalton and one in Ulverston.
Euan Venters, commercial director at the Fairtrade Foundation, said: "We welcome Greggs' commitment to extending the range of Fairtrade products on offer to their customers to bananas.
"When you buy Fairtrade bananas, you're supporting growers all around the world to get a fair price for their crop, in addition to a Fairtrade premium to fund local community projects."
A spokesman for Greggs said: "We are committed to responsible sourcing and are active supporters of Fairtrade with all of our tea, coffee, hot chocolate, sugar sachets, orange juice and apple juice being certified Fairtrade."
