THE government has advertised a job vacancy for a £125,000 position as submarines acquisition director.

The advert placed by the Ministry of Defence states the individual will provide leadership and will be responsible for a £1.5bn annual spend leading the delivery and support of the Successor-class submarines, the Astute-class and a Maritime Underwater Future Capability - currently in concept phase and planned to replace the Astute submarines.

The position will be primarily based from Bristol but is likely to involve a significant amount of time spent in Barrow, where the Royal Navy's submarines are built.

The advert states: "We are now looking for Director, Submarines Acquisition to provide outstanding leadership and flair for technical programme management to help support the Royal Navy strengthen peace and stability around the globe on an enduring basis. From its complexity to its scope to the nature of its impact, this opportunity is one-of-a-kind.

"Responsible for c600 staff and a £1.5bn annual spend, you will lead the delivery and future support in service of the Successor class (the most significant, challenging and ambitious project undertaken by UK industry and government today); the Astute Class, a state of the art nuclear attack submarine; and Maritime Underwater Future Capability, currently in concept phase and planned to replace the Astute Class.

"Across a demanding portfolio of high impact projects and programmes incorporating cutting edge technology, you will ensure rapid responses to changing needs. You will drive improved performance at reduced cost whilst maintaining stringent safety standards. What's more, you will transform approaches and results. We will look to you to champion measurable improvements across ship design and build, lead programmes of strategic importance to UK defence and industry and set the standard for future endeavors.

"You are already a successful senior leader with a proven track record of managing major technical and acquisition programmes in a complex environment, leading large teams and implementing transformational change. You embody commercial excellence, strategic vision and a collaborative approach combined with proven ability to effectively manage delivery partners, work with a wide range of stakeholders and influence at a very senior level. You will also ideally bring detailed understanding of the key challenges facing the UK nuclear programmes.
