A FAMILY has thanked a golf club captain for raising £1,235 to support a children’s cancer charity in memory of their late son.

John Ellis has raised the money during his captaincy at Furness Golf Club with his club colleagues and he has donated the sum to the Team Jake Fund at the Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Group charity.

Team Jake is a fund in memory of Barrow's Jake Ellis, who sadly lost his battle with rhabdomyosarcoman in 2008, aged five.

Jake's parents, Jo-Ann and Nick Ellis, lead the successful fundraising campaign which has generated £160,000 to support the CCLG's vital research into rhabdomyosarcoma.

Mrs Ellis thanked Mr John Ellis (who shares the same surname, but is not related). She said: "A massive thank you to John and the team at Furness Golf Club. We are absolutely thrilled."

Mrs Ellis also thanked Dance Fever for raising £200 for Team Jake and £100 has also been recently raised through the sale of unity bands.

CCLG says the outstanding progress made in cancer treatment is the result of extensive research studies and clinical trials over the last 40 years which now underpin today's standard treatments. The charity says during this time it has played a key role in the success seen in the world of children's cancer so that now more than 80 per cent of children are cured.
