A BARROW school's genie-us production is sweeping audiences away on a magic carpet ride.

Furness Academy has been impressing audiences this week with its performances of Aladdin.

Each year the Barrow secondary's drama department puts on a great musical performance.

Over the years the academy stage has been graced by Beauty and the Beast, The Addams Family, Dorothy and her pals from Oz and even a giant killer plant from Little Shop of Horrors.

This summer the school has been inspired by Disney to perform Aladdin, which is being hailed its greatest show ever.

The fun musical is taking the audiences to a whole new world with great performances, and a fantastic set and costumes.

The show tells the story of “streetrat” Aladdin and Princess Jasmine, and their epic love story that is thwarted by the evil Jafar.

However, with help of his friends and new pal, the Genie, Aladdin wins the heart and the hand of Jasmine.

Genie is played by Year 11 student Curtis McDonald, 16, who has been part of every show during his past five years at Furness Academy and the school said he has received rave reviews.

The two leads, Jasmine and Aladdin are played by Chloe Flores Quezon, 16, and Callum Walsh Hayes, 14.

The academy said this year’s stand our performance has been 12-year-old Matthew Roberts as Iago, Jafar’s pet vulture, with superb comedic timing and excellent voice acting.

Some 40 students make up the ensemble of the cast and another 15 help with the technical support and as stage crew.
