GAME OF THE WEEK

The Witcher 3: Game Of The Year Edition

Platform: PS4

Genre: Action/RPG

Price: £31.99

The witching hour? Wild Hunt will supply you with hundreds... This time last year, The Witcher 3 quite rightly topped the triple-A bill.

Offering a unique combination of a non-linear story and the much-loved open world environment, this fantasy RPG focuses on player choice, tactical combat and a rich, living world. As the final episode in one of the best RPG trilogies to date, long-time fans of the series can once again delight in hooking up with Geralt of Riva, master swordsman and monster hunter, this time with all of the downloadable content and game improvements that have been released in the last 12 months. Accessible to both newcomers and old-time fans, you enter a time of tumultuous conflict, with the Empire attacking the Kingdoms of the North and the Wild Hunt, a cavalcade of ghastly riders breathing down your neck. Here, the only way to survive is to fight back and leave none of your enemies standing. That's no small task in such a gigantic open world, and it's one that you will simultaneously revel in, as well as fear for its sheer scale. But with such outstanding real-time combat, deep strategic RPG options and a cast of simply mesmerising miscreants, there's no doubt this is one award-laden monster challenge that you'll happily accept in all its Game Of The Year glory. 92%

World of Warcraft: Legion

Platform: PC

Genre: RPG

Price: £27.99

Legion will feel the love from WoW RPG veterans Hardcore World Of Warcraft gamers will have been plundering this online world for 10 years or more now, so any significant new content releases have got to cut the mustard if they're going to meet the expected sky-high standards. Legion opens a dark and thrilling new chapter in one of the Warcraft series' greatest conflicts, revealing a host of new developments for some of Azeroth's most iconic heroes and villains. It's an expansion loaded with content that gives players new ways to explore the world and customise their heroes, while the addition of the Demon Hunter class is an absolute joy, provided you have the levelling stats to qualify you for tapping into this beastly battler. To save your world from annihilation, you must unlock the mysteries of the mythic Broken Isles, master powerful Artifact weapons, and strike a forbidden pact with the Demon Hunters of the Illidari - vengeful disciples of the dreaded Illidan Stormrage. It's yet more amazingly immersive stuff, steeped in WoW lore, while simultaneously refreshed by new dungeons, raids and PVP options. Seasoned players will not hesitate to deliver their seal of approval! 90%

God Eater 2: Rage Burst

Platform: PS Vita Genre: Action Price: £24.99 ASIN: B01F1PH64Q Action stations - The Black Plague has landed! Three years following the events of God Eater: Resurrection, a mysterious red rain sparks a fatal pandemic called the Black Plague. With no established cure, this scourge has a mortality rate of 100% once infected, causing members of a special unit to be sent to assist and investigate. That's where you come in, assuming control of the newest recruit as you strive to master incredible weaponry, defeat some pretty enormous monsters, and cooperate with the characters around you to save humanity. Although the graphics and sound could be considered a little rough round the edges for the Vita's small screen, behind these cosmetic imperfections is a perfectly responsible action adventure in the style of the iconic Monster Hunter series. Don't expect the same quality - God Eater 2 certainly plays second fiddle - but do anticipate similar rounds of equipment customisation for battle, dozens of hours of exploration and skill-building towards the missions with the biggest, baddest monster bosses. Overall, it's pretty traditional stuff, with some obvious improvements that could have been made, but for £25, fans of the genre will still find enough to keep them happy for a while. 72%

Space Marshals 2

Platform: iPhone/iPad

Genre: Tactical Shooter

Price: £4.49

Space-aged stealth and shooting, wild-west style! Space Marshals 2 is like the Wild West in space, taking a sci-fi spin on tactical stealthy shooting from a raised isometric perspective. This sequel manages to improve on the original in pretty much every way, and you'll have an absolute blast taking Marshal Burton through the top-down stages that pit your wits against a host of criminals who are up to no good in your galaxy. Although there are only 20 levels to complete, there's a huge amount of depth to each of them, augmented by your varied arsenal, while upper and lower levels also crank up the strategic requirements. New weapons and new game mechanics give Space Marshals 2 the foundations to springboard to new heights, and some of the stealth-oriented group combat sequences are as good as it gets in mobile gaming right now. If trigger-happy battles are your thing, you might want to look elsewhere, but for more considered combat options, Space Marshals 2 is a cracking option, even at the elevated price point. 89%

Nightgate

Platform: iPhone/iPad

Genre: Action

Price: £2.29

Join the dots in deep space Complex geometry meets minimalistic design in this intergalactic challenge for your reflexes, as you enter a futuristic world where intelligent computers are the only life form remaining on Earth. Goodness knows how bleak that must be 375 years from now, but when you boil it down to finger-flicking arcade fun, you must guide a flicker of light through a series of dots or checkpoints until you reach the "boss" dot that guides you into the next level. Red bullets and barriers represent much of the danger in Nightgate, killing you if you touch them. But the controls are very simple to get to grips with, and before you know it, you'll be shimmying through the depths of space with little regard for the evil red obstacles around you. With over 50 levels to tackle, Nightgate offers a significant challenge, particularly on the later stages where careful attention must be paid to the patterns that each set of barriers follows. It's a slick, immersive game, and well worth a look. 81%

WHAT'S HOT AND WHAT'S NOT?

The Pokemon Go phenomenon may be slowing up, if recent player data is anything to go by. Stats from Axiom Capital Management data show that worldwide daily active users peaked in mid July at around 44 million, and a month later, over a third of those players are no more, with the figure down to 29 million. Of course, while any drop in users will be disappointing, a continued player base of 30 million is astounding stuff and likely to keep those Pokemon creatures on their toes as we keep trying to catch 'em all! Meanwhile, in the charts this week, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided strutted proudly into first place following its first week of release, knocking F1 2016 down to two. Madden NFL 17 also performed well in its first seven days, settling at five, while Assetto Corsa and A.O.T. Wings Of Freedom were two other new entries to the top ten, at eight and ten respectively.
