PATIENTS across the area have lifted the lid on what they think of their GP practice in this year's annual NHS survey.

The newly published GP Patient Survey allows people the chance to provide feedback on the quality of service and care they receive when they visit their doctors according to a range of indicators.

The results show that rural Hawkshead Surgery, based in Hawkshead, is among the highest scoring in the country for the 2015/16 year - with 100 per cent of those taking part in the detailed questionnaire happy with the care they received and the way the practice is run.

The data, which is compiled by NHS England, also shows the majority of those who took part in Cumbria - 52 per cent, or 4,064 people - would recommend their practice to someone who had just moved to the area.

And some 88 per cent rate their practice as very good or fairly good overall.

The survey found 77 per cent of patients across the county said they could get an appointment when they wanted - with 48 per cent reporting that this was on the same day or the following day.

However, 52 patients who were not offered a convenient appointment opted instead to visit accident and emergency at their nearest hospital.

A further 156 people chose not to seek any further help for their illness or condition.

Those who filled in the survey in Cumbria were among 800,000 nationwide to score their GP practice on a range of indicators.

Overall this year, four out of five people would recommend their doctor to someone else.

Dr Arvind Madan, director of primary care for NHS England, said: "The GP Patient Survey shows patients appreciate the fantastic job GPs and the wider primary care work force are doing in challenging times."
