MP John Woodcock has been dealt a major blow by his party compatriots - after a local branch of the Labour Party supported a motion of no confidence in him.

According to sources within the Ulverston and Rural Furness Labour Party, members backed the vote overwhelmingly.

It is understood the local membership has grown increasingly angry with Mr Woodcock's attacks on beleaguered Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn - whom they still support.

A recent meeting of the Parliamentary Labour Party ended in anger as Mr Woodcock clashed with Mr Corbyn's trusted aide, Seumas Milne.

Mr Woodcock - whose Barrow and Furness constituency covers Ulverston - was one of the 172 Labour MPs who voted against their leader in a vote of no confidence after Britain voted to leave the EU.

However, Mr Corbyn has stood firm as one of the few remaining political leaders still in his role following the referendum.

In a statement about the decision made by Ulverston Labour supporters, Mr Woodcock said: "This is rather unusual, but I guess feelings are running high over the decision by me and the vast majority of my parliamentary colleagues to ask Jeremy Corbyn to stand down as leader because we think he doesn't stand a chance of getting the Tories out of office at a general election.

"I am disappointed, as I work really hard for Ulverston and only recently became the first member of parliament ever to have a dedicated office in the town, but this will in no way affect my determination to do my best for my constituents.

Mr Woodcock has received the backing from Barrow and Furness constituency Labour Party chairman Terry McSorley.

He said: "Officers of the local party are aware of a meeting and the discussion that took place. John is a very hard-working MP who always stands up for Barrow and Furness in parliament and has great support both in the community and the party as shown in his successful re-election last year."
