A FREE health and wellbeing check-up is to be held next month.

Organised by the local community physiotherapy team from Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, the event hopes to encourage people over 60 to find out how to improve their health and wellbeing.

It will be held at The Forum, Barrow, on Wednesday September 27, with drop-ins available between 10am and 2pm.

Sue Clarke, community physiotherapy team lead, said: "This event will give people the opportunity to find out how physical activity can enable them to stay as independent and healthy as possible.

"Physical activity helps people to live longer, live well and prevent falls, but this does not mean everyone has to go to the gym.

"A few simple exercises at home can be the starting point to make positive changes to our health and wellbeing. Our team are keen to offer advice and guidance to help people start making these changes."

On the day free health and wellbeing check-ups will be offered along with advice on how individuals can enhance their mobility and increase their number of active years. Health professionals will be on hand to look at people's walking aids, to ensure they are appropriate and safe.

Among the professionals attending will be physiotherapists, dietitians, podiatrists and occupational therapists.

Local GP Dr Geoff Joliffe said: "This event is a fantastic way to help local people to realise they have the potential to live a healthier and more independent life within the community.

"Exercise and physical activity can make a huge difference to people's lives and a few small changes can result in really positive results.

"We hope the day will encourage people to lead and take part in local groups and activities which promote health and wellbeing."
