A SATURDAY morning kickabout will see former Premier League stars come to Barrow.

Kick Off 4 Cancer hopes to raise £10,000 for Cancer Research UK with a day of family fun in Hawcoat Park.

A knockout tournament of 16 teams will compete for the Kick Off 4 Cancer Cup today, with a whole host of familiar faces on and off the field.

Dan Webber, organiser of the event, said: “When I had an idea for another charity football match back in October 2016, I never expected this.

"After months of hounding ex-Premier League players and celebrities, I am proud to be bringing a line up to Barrow that has just got bigger and bigger."

The star-studded line up includes former Liverpool star Roy Evans and ex-Manchester City defender Lee Crooks, as well as Tony Vaughan, Lee Martin, Trevor Benjamin, Nick Culkin, Ben Thornley and Craig Armstrong.

As well as the on-field fun, there will also be an offside stage, which will include Britain's Got Talent stars Craig Ball and The Voice's Jolan.

Other confirmed performers include local acts Paper Cranes, Chloe Pinney and Chelsea Begley.

The event follows last year's Fighting Fitz campaign, which completed a different fundraiser during each month of 2016.

It was inspired by Mr Webber's sister-in-law, Danielle Fitzsimons, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2015 and is now in remission.

He said: “Last year we raised more than £15,000 through things like football matches and skydiving. Now I've taken this event to a bigger stage and bigger challenge.”

Mr Webber is hoping the event can become a regular fixture in the calendar.

He said: “The idea now is that my organisation will do this more to help UK-based charities. Next year I'm looking to do Kick Off 4 Dementia or Kick Off 4 Autism.”

“The whole family is welcome. We've got football, we've got the entertainment stage, and we've got a fun field too. There'll be a bouncy castle, inflatable slides and facepainting for kids.”

The event is sponsored by RfM Accountants, with Kutz Hairstyles, TM Developments and Bathrooms and Irv's Restos associate sponsors.

The fun starts at Hawcoat Park, Barrow, at 11am.
