MORE than 500 people voted in an EU referendum at a Barrow coffee shop.

Customers used sugar sticks and after they were totted up they found 53 per cent of people wanted out, 32 per cent wanted to stay in Europe and 15 per cent were undecided as the fun poll closed yesterday.

The Last Resort, in Cavendish Street, prides itself on being topical – plus a favourite place for JK Rowling to grab a coffee – and is often decorated for different occasions.

Cafe owner Mike Stephenson, said that they usually avoid discussing politics in the shop but this year with the impending referendum has been the main subject of conversation with many of their customers for several weeks.

He said: "There was a fairly even split between both camps but the out voters seem a little more outspoken in airing their views.

"However many customers seem undecided due to the lack of reliable information being offered up by both sides.

"We thought it would be fun to do a mini referendum in the shop as a straw poll and to stimulate further good humoured debate on the subject.

"I suspect many people will change their vote again due to 'Project Fear' and the vote will be closer than ever."

The Last Resort was featured in the Harry Potter author's crime caper last year. Writing under her pseudonym Robert Galbraith, JK's novel, Career of Evil , is to be serialised by the BBC and could see filming in the town.
