A TOP Barrow GCSE achiever has ambitions to swap school assemblies for the Welsh Assembly and become First Minister for Wales.

Cai Williams was over the moon with his A* in Welsh and his full set of results of two A*s, three As, five Bs and a C, to add to his B and a distinction from last year.

Furness Academy, in Barrow, arranged for Cai to sit the Welsh GCSE alongside his other subjects.

The 16-year-old, who is originally from North Wales and whose first language is Welsh, is a member Plaid Cymru.

He plans to stand in the next Welsh elections in 2021, when he is 21, and be voted in as an Assembly Member. Cai would one day like to become First Minister for Wales.

The young politician in the making was offered an internship with Plaid Cymru MP Liz Saville Roberts, who represents Dwyfor Meirionnydd in the UK Parliament. Cai impressed in his application and was selected for the role at 16, even though the internship was intended for older candidates.

He said it was a difficult decision to turn down the internship but he wants to do his A-Levels first and then move into politics.

Cai said: "I feel really good and happy with my results."

The teenager who moved from Blaenau Ffestiniog to Barrow aged eight, said: "I want to stand in the next Welsh elections. There is no point in waiting, I know what I want to do."

Asked about his ambitions, he said: "I think it's a chance to change things and make a difference. I want to give people a voice and help them.

"I've been interested in politics for three or four years.

"I'd like to be First Minister for Wales."

Cai thanked his teachers, including Anna Rothnie who made it possible for him to study Welsh at GCSE.

He will study his A-Levels at Ulverston Victoria High School Sixth Form.

Furness Academy students enjoyed a cooked breakfasts and music in canteen as they collected their GCSE results.
