A MOTHER and daughter are looking forward to their first family bike ride, thanks to a generous donation.

Ten-year-old cycling fan Keira Baggaley has finally got her hands on her very own specially-adapted trike

Keira wowed the crowds during the children’s races at the Barrow leg of the Pearl Izumi Tour Series in May while riding a trike belonging to her school, Sandside Lodge in Ulverston.

Following her success, mum Melanie decided to try and raise the £500 needed to buy Keira her own set of wheels.

After a public appeal via the Evening Mail, Barrow firm Integrated Network Systems Ltd offered to cover the whole cost and the brand new trike was delivered last week.

Mrs Baggaley, 45, of Green Lane, Dalton, said: “She’s had her mouth open the whole time, which is what she does whenever she gets excited.

“She’s been round the block four times and we’ve put it in the car to make sure it fits.”

Keira relies on a gastrostomy feeding tube and struggles to use other models of bikes.

But now the mother and daughter duo are planning their first ride together.

Mrs Baggaley said: “I’ve been out on my bike today to work our routes that we can go on with Keira.

“We’re looking at going to Boson’s Locker on Piel Island because she likes it there and that’s a nice straight ride for her.

“I’m a keen cyclist and she always used to come out with me on the back of my bike up until the time she got too big. “We tried buying numerous different types of bike for her and we just couldn’t get it to work.

“It was only when I saw her at the bike event in Barrow that I realised this could be brilliant for her.”

The proud mum also gave a heartfelt thank you to INS for their kind gesture.

She said: “It’s absolutely amazing. They even sent Keira a card introducing themselves, she was as delighted to get that through the door as she was getting the bike.”

Donations totalling £130, which the Evening Mail received before INS stepped in, were passed on to Harrison’s Fun Fund to go towards a trike for one of Keira’s schoolmates.

Another trike given to Mrs Baggaley by Leanne Bradley has also been donated on to Sandside Lodge.
