A crew from Barrow was called to a small grass fire near to a footpath in Rampside Road just before 11am on Monday morning.
The fire was extinguished but firefighters contacted gas engineers because of a smell of gas. The area is close to Centrica Energy's gas terminals.
Firefighters were detained at the scene for two hours while waiting for the National Gas Emergency Service technicians to arrive to deal with the leaking gas main.
