FIRE crews who tacked a major blaze at a rundown industrial estate were called back to the scene as fire broke out again.

Firefighters returned to Salthouse Mills in Barrow at 7.30am today and spent five hours at the scene.

A new fire had broken out in a small workshop which was filled with car interior linings.

Mark Ducie, Barrow station manager, said: "The site was still smouldering due to the intensity of the fire. We were called back because an area of the building had reignited.

"It was a deep-seated fire and was difficult to get to, but the crew managed to deal with it by basically drowning it out with water."

Today, the charred remains of the building and its contents smouldered in the immediate aftermath of the blaze, which was seen for miles around.

The burned out shells of cars - understood to have been used for banger racing - sit among the debris of the collapsed roof.

At the height of the fire, which started at 11.30am on Tuesday, crews from Barrow, Ulverston, Grange and Broughton attended, with 30 firefighters on the scene.

The plumes of smoke could be see from offshore gas platforms, and as far afield as Millom and Marton.

Barrow Borough Council's environmental health department has been contacted about the incident and has sent a sample from the site off for analysis.

It is unclear at this stage what the material sample is, but tests will help establish this.

Public Health England has been informed about the incident. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
