Different fire crews from across the area were in Barrow this morning following a fire incident at a shipyard.

Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service units from Barrow, Ulverston and Walney responded to an incident where scaffolding caught fire in the BAE Systems complex.

The incident, which occurred at around 11:15am, was caused by welding sparks in the New Assembly Shop annexe at the shipyard.

Welders at the scene managed to attack the fire with an extinguisher before fire crews arrived.

Upon arrival, two firefighters entered the area with breathing apparatus, and the remaining flames were extinguished.

A spokesperson for BAE Systems said: "We can confirm there was a small fire in our New Assembly Shop annexe this morning.

"As a precaution, Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service attended to support our Fire and Rescue personnel.

"The fire was quickly extinguished. There were no injuries and no significant damage."
