GAME OF THE WEEK

Mafia III

Platform: Xbox One

Genre: Action/Adventure

Open-world adventuring with some heavy historical context Nobody knows how to tackle real-world material in a virtual setting better than 2K Games. Or perhaps that should be widened to owners Take Two, who in turn own Rockstar.

Here, Mafia III moves into the tricky territory of 1968 where, after years in Vietnam, Lincoln Clay knows this truth: family isn't who you're born with, it's who you are willing to die for.

Now back home, in a new New Orleans, Lincoln is dedicated to rebuilding his life, but established ties keep him from exiting the city.

As you'd expect in a gritty, open-world adventure of this kind, it takes more than a few friends to make it in this new world, and intense gun fights, hand-to-hand combat and white knuckle driving all soon become the order of the day. But with the right crew, tough decisions and some dirty hands, it's possible to reach the top of the city's underworld, as this imaginary crime story roots itself firmly in the racial tensions of America during the Civil Rights Movement.

It's brutal at times, with brilliant storytelling to boot, and if the previous two Mafia titles are anything to go by, the dozens of hours invested in this digital recreation of a fascinating period of US history will prove to be time very well spent. 89%

Paper Mario: Colour Splash

Platform: Nintendo Wii U

Genre: Action/Adventure

Price: £39.99

Mario's action paper outing cuts a dash on Wii U The arrival of any new Mario title is guaranteed to get the pulse racing, even if it is on Nintendo's Wii U console, which is lagging way behind the popularity of Sony and Microsoft's frontrunners.

Here, a mystery is afoot on Prism Island, and only Paper Mario can solve it by restoring the island's vanishing colours with his new Paint Hammer and the powerful Battle Cards up his sleeve. The latter builds a fresh layer of strategy on top of the always-engaging action adventure fun that Mario titles constantly deliver on.

This tactical use of cards during puzzling stand-offs helps to topple opponents more easily, as you summon objects with Things cards and allies with Enemy cards. Graphically, Colour Splash is incredibly vibrant, cleverly pulling on the paper aspect of this world to flummox you with the different folds of the world around you, while mixing the 2D elements with 3D locations superbly. The new cut-out feature that allows you to extract areas from environments to overcome obstacles whenever possible, is genius!

All in all, it's a hugely enjoyable action adventure that proves you can't keep a good plumber down.

All he needs is a team of buddies around him to keep the next Nintendo console top of the tree! 85%

Darkest Dungeon

Platform: PS4

Genre: RPG

Price: £17.99

Stressful RPG strategy under the cover of darkness Darkest Dungeon is a gothic rogue-like RPG dungeon crawler about the psychological stresses of adventuring.

You must lead a band of four heroes on a perilous side-scrolling descent, dealing with a prodigious number of threats to their bodily health, and worse, a relentless assault on their mental fortitude!

Five hundred feet below the earth, you will not only fight unimaginable foes, but famine, disease, and the stress of the ever-encroaching dark. Unlike most similar titles, here the focus is on the humanity and psychological vulnerability of the heroes, where we're asked: "What emotional toll does a life of adventure take?"

Make no mistake, though, it's packed with oodles of tactical strategy, as you strive to assemble a killer team capable of returning victorious from the most dangerous missions, accompanied by an excellent combat system and layers of unpredictability that will keep tensions high and enjoyment similarly lofty. 88%

The Banner Saga 2

Platform: iPhone/iPad

Genre: Strategy

Price: £3.99

A sumptuous saga sequel for tactical RPG fans Most games deliver a degree of confusion, or at least uncertainty, at the outset as you grapple with a new set of controls, a suite of complex objectives and a storyline that's only just begun. The Banner Saga 2 is no different, but as your central character is thrown into a position of leadership through the tragic circumstances that have gone before, that feeling of initial helplessness and desperation to make the right decisions is felt all the more forcefully.

It's a sensation that acts as a compelling reason to plough on in this beautifully presented tactical RPG, where traditional grid-based battles and rounds of military upgrades are wonderfully built upon by crisp cartoon-style graphics and a narrative that guides you through hours and hours of engaging content.

Don't feel that the first game is a pre-requisite to playing. Just trust in the tutorials and story re-cap and dive headlong into a deep adventure that proves just how powerful mobile gaming can be these days. 87%

Infinite Tanks

Platform: iPhone/iPad

Genre: Action

Price: £3.99

Tanks a lot for this heavyweight action app! Big metal machines with colossal cannons in the palm of your hand? What's not to like?

Controlling your tank's movement with the left side of the screen and turret with the right, you're out on a mission to pretty much annihilate everything and anything that dares get in your way. Before you even hit the trigger for the multitude of primary and secondary weapons at your disposal, be aware that your hulking great vehicle can mow most stuff down by just driving over it, leaving you to spend more time targeting the pesky enemies that might (quite rightly) be taking cover from you. The upgrades and customisation extends to the tanks themselves, where you can test drive different models to match your play style.

There's not a huge amount of difference in each one, but it's a nice touch and may give you an edge here and there in those all-important online battles. That'll be where Infinite Tanks secures a place in app history or not.

If it can mobilise a community addicted to blowing each other to bits, then this can be considered a worthy £3.99 investment and a fitting theatre for its fine graphics and simple, effective gameplay. 80%
