FAMILIES and modeller enthusiasts have flocked to a popular model railway and transport exhibition this weekend.

Visitors of all ages have enjoyed viewing the various track layouts and models on display at Furness Model Railay Club's 55th Model Railway and Transport Exhibition, held at Barrow Sixth Form College, today and yesterday.

The intricate details of the railway and scenery layouts, included rolling hills with wildlife, valleys and rivers and town scenes, created by clubs from around the country.

The picturesque Swiss Pass display, created by Furness Model Railway Club won the Fred L. Firth Memorial Trophy.

The event also featured larger engine models from the engineering section of the Furness club, and exhibits from Furness Model Boat Club, South Lakes Model Flying Club.

Youngsters were delighted to have a go on the Thomas the Tank Engine activity and marvel at the

Lego World display, featuring the likes of the Taj Mahal ,Tower Bridge and F1 Ferrari made from Lego bricks.

Little ones like Elliot Barrow, five, and Buddy Edwards, three, were amazed by the moving exhibits and sounds.

Ian Edwards, 39, of Dalton, said: "Buddy loves trains and seeing all the displays. I like all the details and environments in the exhibits."

Russell Peters, chairman of Furness Model Railway Club, said the attendance was up on last year. We are very pleased. We always try to bring new displays, but the same traders so people have that continuity.

"The hobby has moved on. The train set you got as a child is still available as a starter set, but you can now get super detailed models, digital control and sound. The hobby can grow with you. It teaches you woodworking skills, electronic skills, scenery and art skills.

The event runs until 5pm today.
