COMPLAINTS have poured in from angry residents after caravans they called an "eyesore" have returned to their street for the second time.

A number of vehicles including several caravans and a boat have been parked in Devonshire Road, Barrow despite residents campaigning to have them removed earlier this year.

Pensioner Elaine Warden lives in Romney Road, Barrow, and her property overlooks the vehicles.

She said: "It is an absolute eyesore, it's disgusting outside a public cemetery, very disrespectful.

"The back of my house faces on it and people are always commenting on it and it looks terrible."

The 74-year-old said there are around five or six caravans and a van which have been parked on the street also know as 'Cemetery Hill' for well over a year.

She added: "I have spoken to the council and they said its not their jurisdiction, no-one wants to with it.

"The police are saying they are not causing an obstruction so they can't do anything about them."

Councillor Bill McEwan, who represents Ormsgill on Barrow Borough Council, dealt with the situation in February and worked hard to try and combat the problem and managed to get fixed penalty notices issued.

He said he was "disappointed" no residents had contacted him this time but that he was aware the issue was unresolved.

He said: "I am disappointed no one knew to contact me because they can always get in touch with me for things like this.

"We are aware of the problem but it's a hard process because you need to know who owns them before anything can be done."

Cllr McEwan has contacted the Highways Agency in the hopes they can liaise with police and find the registered owners.

He added: "It's a wide road so there are no problems for traffic but it's just unsightly and I have to pass it every day.

"It's a terrible situation and if the police can't move them I don't know who can."

The Ormsgill representative has also urged any residents to contact him straight away should they have any concerns.
