The Lumley Street school joined others across the globe in celebrating Harry Potter Book Night, treating youngsters to games, activities, readings and quizzes.

Pupils dressed up as their favourite wizards and witches from the JK Rowling books, donning cloaks and scarves to look just like their fictional heroes.

Tracey Needham, librarian at Sacred Heart, said: "We are so excited to be joining up with schools, libraries, bookshops and community centres throughout the UK and Ireland – and, indeed, the world – to celebrate the third annual Harry Potter Book Night.

"We have always been fans of the Harry Potter books because it's the stories we love best that live in us forever."

The evening began when the Sorting Hat decided which Hogwarts house each pupil belonged to, with young Gryffindors, Slytherins, Ravenclaws and Hufflepuffs all competing for points in classes on herbology, potions and transfiguration.

Some of the tasks included making a "mandrake", a plant which has a root that looks like a human, creating animals out of paper and having fun with origami, and recreating the famous moving portraits of Hogwarts.

It wasn't just pupils who got in on the Harry Potter themed action as the teachers of Sacred Heart got into character by playing the roles of the various professors of Hogwarts, including Dumbledore, Snape and Sprout.

The purpose of the event was all about encouraging young people to be excited about reading and literature and let their imaginations run wild.

Judging by the costume creations and enthusiasm on show, they certainly did that.
