EMERGENCY services rescued an elderly woman after she fell about 20 metres in Barrow.

Crews used ropes and sling harness to safely bring the casualty to ground level after she fell down the slag banks in Forge Close at about 5.05pm yesterday.

Firefighters from Barrow, Furness Coastguard and Cumbria Police were all called to the incident.

The woman, who was described as "despondent", had fallen down a steep banking and was unable to get back up.

Firefighters sent down a cliff rescue technician to stabilise the casualty while Furness Coastguard lowered a basket stretcher.

Once the woman was secure both coastguard and fire and rescue members performed a hand haul recovery.

The woman, who did not sustain major injuries, was then transferred into the care of the North West Ambulance Service.
