A PENSIONER who had to be freed from underneath a car after a collision in Barrow remains in hospital in a serious condition.

Police closed Greengate Street in Barrow for a number of hours on Friday afternoon after a car and a pedestrian were involved in a collision at around 12.28pm.

Fire crews from Barrow and Walney used specialist equipment to cut free the woman, an 85-year-old from Barrow, who was trapped underneath the car.

She was put in an induced coma by the doctor-led Great North Air Ambulance team before being taken to the Royal Preston Hospital by road.

The woman suffered multiple injuries and her condition has this morning been described as serious but stable.

The collision happened between the junctions with School Street and Allison Street.

The incident involved a Peugeot 206 which was driven by a 30-year-old Barrow woman, who is not believed to be injured, and the road reopened in the early evening after initial collision investigations were carried out.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to the collision to contact PC 1639 Wilson on 101.
