POLICE have welcomed the jail sentence handed to an abusive thug who terrified train passengers in Barrow as they release a 14-minute audio clip of his foul-mouthed tirade.

*WHILE EVERY CARE HAS BEEN TAKEN TO EDIT OUT SWEAR WORDS, SOME READERS MAY STILL FIND THE AUDIO CLIP OFFENSIVE*

Stephen Greenhalgh was on the 5.37pm Carlisle-Barrow train on Monday June 5 when he began swearing, making threats and smoking onboard the rush-hour service in front of disgusted commuters.

As the train pulled into Workington, the conductor reported the incident by calling ahead to British Transport Police who arranged to meet the train when it arrived at Barrow.

At 8.30pm, the carriages pulled into Barrow, where PC Adam Heslop and his colleague were waiting for Greenhalgh.

While PC Heslop waited with Greenhalgh for cops from Barrow to turn up and take him to the cells, the 56-year-old thug became verbally abusive towards the British Transport Police officers.

PC Heslop switched on his radio to record the rant and BTP have given The Mail exclusive access to the clip.

The audio clip has been edited to bleep out any swear words or offensive language.

Greenhalgh can be heard hurling possibly every swear word known to man at the two officers, and at one point even admits: "I'm on drugs me, all the time."

He is aggressive and threatens violence towards both PCs, and says to one: "Do you want to sit down on that wet bench lad? I can put you on it if you want."

After a police van arrives, Greenhalgh is then taken to the police station in Barrow where his abuse continues.

Referring to his repeated use of foul language, one police officer is heard saying to another: "Can you guess what he's been arrested for?"

Greenhalgh, surprised by how many police officers are in the custody suite, comments: "It's like Carry On Coppers in here."

After 14 minutes of non-stop expletives, the officers involved have clearly heard much of the language already, with one saying: "He's running out of vocabulary."

Greenhalgh appeared at Furness Magistrates' Court in Barrow last Wednesday where he pleaded guilty to being abusive and threatening to passengers onboard a train, an offence which was in breach of a criminal behaviour order.

Greenhalgh, of Egerton Court, was given the two-year order last June after admitting assaulting a neighbour and spitting in a woman's hair.

The order prohibits him from using abusive, insulting, threatening or intimidating language or behaviour within the sight or hearing of a person not of the same household.

Greenhalgh was jailed for 30 days and ordered to pay a £115 victim surcharge.
