A WOMAN who survived legionnaires’ disease has criticised the “disgusting” conditions of the changing facilities at her gym.

DW SPORTS  Doreen Davies, of Barrow, has slammed the condition of changing and toilet facilities at DW Fitness Centre, in Hindpool Road, Barrow, after she claims to have spotted pubic hairs on the floor, and hair and other grime clogging up toilets and shower heads.

Mrs Davies, who was diagnosed with legionnaires’ disease in the early 2000s, was in a coma for a period as a result of her illness.

She has become increasingly concerned about the health and safety aspects of her gym. Mrs Davies said: “I thought it was disgusting, the showers were all blocked with hair and grime at six in the morning when I arrived. It has been like that for some time.

“I have been left scarred because of the legionnaires’ – I was really poorly and nearly died. I’m not just concerned for my health, but of the other people using the facilities.”

Mrs Davies also claims that she has raised other issues with staff at the gym, including the temperature of the whirlpool baths and steam room facilities on the mornings that she attends.

She has also submitted photographic evidence to the Evening Mail, which, in her opinion, show hairs around toilet cubicles and toilet bowls filled with used toilet roll.

On its company website, DW Fitness Clubs describes its swim, steam and spa facilities as “sumptuously appointed and spacious”, and that their changing rooms have the “wow factor”.

The Evening Mail has contacted the parent company, DW Sports, but no-one from the firm has so far been available for comment.
