A WOMAN from Barrow was arrested on suspicion of causing a public nuisance after coastguard and lifeboat volunteers, police and paramedics were called to reports of a 'despondent' female near Walney Channel.

Furness Coastguard initially said they had been called to reports of two respondent women at 4.55am yesterday morning. Police have since confirmed only one woman was at the scene.

Other emergency services, including a lifeboat crew, police officers and paramedics also attended, believing the woman would attempt to jump into the water. Millom Coastguard was also tasked to assist.

After around an hour and-a-half, the woman, a 22-year-old from Barrow, was arrested on suspicion of causing a public nuisance.

Police said she remains in custody this morning.

A spokeswoman said: "Police were called yesterday (March 22nd) at 4.47am to reports of concern for the welfare of a woman, near to the Dock Museum, on North Road, Barrow.

"Officers and other agencies attended to ensure the safety of the woman.

"The 22-year-old was arrested on suspicion of causing a public nuisance and is still being questioned by police."
