STAFF, governors and volunteers have raised a teacup to a Leece couple who have finally retired after spending 23 years volunteering at Furness General Hospital in Barrow.

Phyl and Roy Harrison stepped down from their roles at the Royal Voluntary Service shop this week.

Mrs Harrison said: “I have found the whole team of staff and volunteers friendly, approachable, efficient and passionate about their work. I really have loved every minute of it.”

The much-loved couple will be spending their retirement looking after each other and their three large greenhouses. A retirement party was held for them at the hospital on September 1.

Barry Rigg, community engagement manager for the trust which runs FGH, the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, thanked the couple for their “inspirational achievement”.

Executive chief nurse, Sue Smith, added: “To think that Phyl and Roy have dedicated nearly a quarter of century to helping others is absolutely amazing, and we can’t thank them enough. We wish them all the best for a relaxing retirement - they’ve certainly earned it!”
