AN inquest into the suspicious death of a baby girl from Barrow is set to begin in May - four years after she died.

Senior coroner for Cumbria, David Roberts, announced this morning that the formal hearing into the death of Poppi Worthington will get underway on May 15.

It will be held at County Hall, in Kendal, and is expected to last three weeks.

Poppi died at Furness General Hospital in December 2012 shortly after collapsing at her home in Barrow overnight.

Last year, High Court judge Mr Justice Jackson ruled on balance of probability that the 13-month-old had been seriously sexually assaulted by her father, Paul Worthington, before she died.

She was also found to have suffered a leg fracture some weeks before her death for which she received no treatment.

Mr Worthington, 48, has always denied any wrongdoing in relation to his daughter.

A previous inquest held to establish the circumstances surrounding the death of the little girl, held in 2014, heard no evidence and recorded her death as 'unascertained'.

It was later overturned.

A second inquest was due to take place last year.

However it was postponed in September to allow crown prosecutors to reassess the evidence available in the case.

They confirmed no-one will be charged over Poppi's death following a botched investigation by Cumbria police.
