A TEAM of South Cumbrian cyclists are aiming to smash a £2,500 fundraising target by taking on the W2W Coast to Coast route from Walney to Whitby in just one day.

The riders, backed by a support vehicle crew, are braving the gruelling 152 miles in the saddle in aid of St Mary‘s Hospice in Ulverston on July 23/24.

Group member, Mark Barnes, said: “I first thought of a challenging bike ride back in November.

“As so many of our cycling friends were keen to do it, I suggested we do it for charity. We all have our own choice of charity and we thought it best to just have one.”

The group’s fundraising target could provide 301 in-patient meals or 132 hours of patient care. Alternatively, it could enable 29 patients to attend day care.

A number of local garages have helped raise £950 towards making the fundraising trip happen, through helping with accommodation costs. They include: Ashworth Street Garage, Dalton; Cumbria Tyres, Ulverston; Athersmiths Motor Services, Ulverston; Lloyds Motor Services, Barrow; Tudor Car Services Limited, Barrow; Little Tony’s Tyre Shop, Barrow; Freelance Mechanics, Barrow; Roosecote Service Station; Columba Garage, Walney; Crooklands Autobody, Dalton; Long Lane Garage; Foundry Street Garage, Barrow; Emlyn Street Tyre Services, Barrow; and Chris Ritchie Garage Services, Barrow.
